Nancy earned an undergraduate degree
from Presbyterian College in South Carolina, a Master
of Science in Social Gerontology from Central Missouri
State University, and a Master of Science in Counseling
Psychology from Avila College.
In addition, Nancy has been certified as a Grief Counselor through the Association
of Death Education and Counseling. She has completed eight courses in Critical
Incident Stress Management and is a certified Trained Trainer for Individual,
Group & Suicide Critical Incident Stress Management, Grief Following
Trauma, Helping Children On The Scene & Law Enforcement Perspectives
through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). She
holds a Certificate of Specialized Training on Schools and Children Crisis
Response with the ICISF. She is a certified trainer in Traumatic Grief by
the Office for Victims of Crime, a trainer on Death Notification through
Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, and as a trainer for Community Emergency Response
Teams by FEMA. Nancy is a certified Trauma Specialist with the Association
of Traumatic Stress Specialists and has completed Mass Fatalities Incident
Response Planning from the National Mass Fatalities Institute.
Locally, Nancy was one of the founders of the Grief Support Network and served
on its board for 11 years. She is the founder and acting director of the
Trauma Support Network, and a member of the American Red Cross Homeland Security
Council Mental Health, a member of the Kansas City Metro Child Traumatic
Stress Program, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the Kansas
City Suicide Awareness and Prevention Program.
Nancy has provided workshops and seminars on various topics of grief and trauma
throughout the mid-west. She has provided training for the U.S. Marine Corps.
Her expertise comes from her close professional involvement with individuals
and families of all ages who are grieving, or have experienced a trauma,
gained through nearly 25 years of experience. She has edited books and provided
her expertise to several authors of bereavement and trauma books.
Nancy has been the Director of Family Care Services for D.W. Newcomer’s
Sons Funeral Homes and Cemeteries since 1995. Prior to that, she served as
a consultant for the company for 7 years. Before coming to Kansas City, Nancy
worked for Hospice of Greenville, SC, and served as founding Director of Hospice
of Greenwood, SC.
Nancy is an active member of the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists
and the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation(ICISF).
